Photos of any benchmark sites found will be posted at intervals over the coming days, weeks, months, years, decades, centuries ... NUMBER 1,102

BENCHMARKS continued


A WD (war department) mark on Lyster Street in Athlone, spotted, photographed, and forwarded by Linda de Buitlear. This one, No 1, was the first one of nine which were carved in that vicinity. Another place that still has a few of these WD marks is Benburb Street in Dublin. Both locations are close to former British military barracks. I suspect they were used to train the young sapper laddie boys in the noble profession of map making.
